What We Hold Onto

 What We Hold Onto

38 Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at  Jesus’ feet and heard His word. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.”

41 And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42 But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”  - Luke 10:38-42

Two hands and arms have limits. They can only carry a certain amount before something is inevitably dropped. Even the most impressive feat of carrying acrobatics can only take you so far.

Life can feel like an armful of burden. Like Martha, we carry so much until things start to fall. After all, we only have two hands. It’s not impressive when we juggle too many things. It’s exhausting and ineffective.

At some point we need to decide what to hold onto and what to drop. First to go is worry, bitterness, and the constant pressure to compare yourself with others. These things have no purpose and will only hurt us along the way. Then there’s the things we do that are fruitless, the obligations we take because we want to please others instead of doing what is most beneficial to all. As Jesus told Martha, she worried about too many things instead of focusing on what mattered most.

What’s left when you lay aside the less important things is faith in God, the people we love, and the things we truly need to do. When you carry these things only, you may have full hands but it is manageable, and what you carry is good.

What we hold onto is important, and what we choose as important can make or break us. Let’s make sure that we’re holding onto the right things.

God bless,

Michael
