Where We Spend It

 Where We Spend It

By Michael Orr

Everyone has power and strength to use,

Distributed as needed however they choose,

Vitality spent on work or for pleasure,

Displaying in full the things they most treasure

But try as we might to hide or defend it,

Our measure of worth is found where we spend it.

On joy or on sorrow, on bitter or sweet,

On reveling in victory or lost in defeat,

The time and the passing are always the same,

We choose how we use it, no one else is to blame,

And regardless of why or how much we intend it,

The result is decided by how we spend it.

Perhaps we will choose to better our choices,

To drown out the chorus of self-serving voices,

Or live for the moment to nurture our greed,

And turn a blind eye to the stranger in need,

When time is unraveled no power can mend it,

Our life will be judged in the manner we spend it.

For who is the author and where is the pen?

Is it not written down in the choices of men?

We’re given a moment to live in the sun,

And we’re judged by the Maker for all that we’ve done,

When the writing is finished we cannot rescind it,

We will all give account for the way that we spend it.
