Nothing to Fear
Nothing
to fear
So we
just went through a month when fear is celebrated and scary things were
littered across peoples’ homes and yards.
Halloween is a time when fear is celebrated and even fun for a lot of
people. Fear is something people
understand very well and can often find strength in facing their fears and
concerns. Fear of death, in particular,
is something we can all relate to in one way or another.
That’s
why I love Psalm 56, which is quoted in the New Testament as a reminder that
the fear of what can happen to us physically does not have to control our
thoughts. In verses 3-4 of the Psalm the
writer says…
Whenever I am afraid
I will trust in You.
4 In God (I will praise His word)
In God I have put my trust;
I will not fear.
What can flesh do to me?
I will trust in You.
4 In God (I will praise His word)
In God I have put my trust;
I will not fear.
What can flesh do to me?
Consider that the whole chapter is about the
constant persecution the writer felt from his enemies, who were also hostile
towards the Lord. In spite of the
threats he felt from those who would harm him, when he became afraid he trusted
in God. Why? Because God is greater than any fear, any
threat, or any harm we face. Because God
will not fail us, even if we face physical harm or suffering.
Ultimately, the physical fears we have will be
pointless once we go to be with God. In
this life God sees you, loves you, and will keep you holy so long as you trust
in Him. As the Psalmist said, let us put
our trust in God, so that we will not fear.
After all, with God on our side, what do we have to be afraid of?
God
bless,
Michael
