Proven Innocent

It’s hard to imagine a person clearly guilty of a crime getting set free.  It happens on occasion and there are times when a court case has a different outcome than we expect.  Sometimes the judge shows leniency and sometimes there is a mistake made by the prosecution that nullifies the case.  Whatever the reason, the idea of “Innocent until proven guilty” gives every person accused of a crime the benefit of the doubt.  Prove guilt and you are guilty.  If there is no proof of guilt, the jury could very well vote in favor of the defendant.

Now imagine a situation where a convicted person is suddenly set free, and not only free but proven to be innocent, not of their crimes, but of the guilt and conviction of those crimes.  Even a pardon does not make a person innocent of crime…It only frees them.  That’s the thing about God, in that He not only frees us from the conviction of sin and the consequence of sin, he even restores our innocence.

Romans 8:1-2 tells us this:

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who[a] do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.

Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, we are not only freed from condemnation, but we are free from anything that convicted us of sin.  We are made clean and pure by the blood of Jesus, but only if we walk according to the Spirit of God.  If we continue to live as criminals, we will still be condemned as such. The thing is, we have no reason to walk in sin, but every reason to walk in the Spirit and according to the will of God.  We are free but not to sin.  We are free to be spiritual, Godly people who are now no longer condemned by our sin.  If we have been proven innocent, let’s walk in a clear path before the Lord.
